Cleveland Cavaliers trade Mo Williams, Jamario Moon to Los Angeles Clippers

The Cavaliers have traded for Los Angeles Clippers point guard Baron Davis, according to multiple reports early Thursday morning.

In exchange for Davis and the Clippers’ first-round pick in June’s NBA Draft, the Cavaliers send to Los Angeles point guard Mo Williams and forward Jamario Moon. Moon played in Wednesday night’s home loss to Houston, while Williams sat out.

The Cavs continue to stockpile draft picks, with the Clippers’ selection giving them 17 picks — 10 of their own, seven acquired through trades, including those in the sign-and-trade with Miami for LeBron James — between now and 2015. The Clippers, if the season ended today, would have the eighth-worst record in the league. They also get a two-time All-Star in Davis, but that comes with risks: Davis, a well-known malcontent, previously feuded with Cavs coach Byron Scott while each was with the New Orleans; reports, though, say the two duo’s relationship has improved. Davis also leaves behind Clippers rookie forward Blake Griffin, the most exciting young player in the league who won last weekend’s All-Star slam dunk contest. On the plus side, the Cavaliers still have the $14 million-plus trade exception they earned in the Miami sign-and-trade; in any NBA trade, salaries have to match up within 25%; Williams and Moon combine to make $12.27 million, while Davis makes $13.05 million this season. So the Cavs still can make another trade and use the trade exception, which allows them to take back salaries up to $14 million without sending anything in return. And Davis also famously was heckled by Clippers owner Donald Sterling during a game in December.Davis is due $13.9 million next season and $14.85 million in 2012-13, but Williams and Moon next year potentially were owed $11.69 million, so the trade doesn’t hinder the Cavaliers’ flexibility too greatly. In 2012-13, the last year of Davis’ current deal, the Cavs, depending on how the situation plays out, could trade his expiring contract — treated like gold in the league.
