Former U.S. Cellular CEO Rooney dies

— John E. “Jack” Rooney, the former president and CEO of U.S. Cellular Corp. who helped build the company into one of the nation’s largest mobile carriers, died Friday.

 

Mr. Rooney, 69, stepped down as chief executive last year.

A company spokeswoman confirmed his death.

 

Mr. Rooney joined U.S. Cellular Corp. in 2000, coming from Ameritech Corp. He was credited with helping the company expand, particularly in Chicago.

 

Mr. Rooney was involved in the acquisition of PrimeCo Wireless Communications LLC and in the placing the company’s name on the White Sox baseball stadium.
