Improving without sliding backward
It is not unusual to observe that when things are not running well, it is mostly due to people not executing the basics well. But we find it to be a particularly strong theme of late. Readers may recall our writing just a few months ago about getting back to basics. Furthermore, what we wrote about last week regarding the tourism supply chain and the immigration queues at Suvarnabhumi airport is really about the same. But it used to work better though, right?
A specific twist to what we have been personally experiencing of late is of things sliding backward. For example, we are beleaguered Toronto Maple Leafs hockey fans. At the start of the season they were playing so well, and what team management and players all talked about was how well they were executing the basics. But they have just experienced a terrible slump in performance resulting in the coach being fired. And what does the new coach talk about? Getting back to basics.

Using social media sites for personal customer service: The holy grail for brands?
Research reveals that personal interaction with customers over social media sites is the most effective thing brands using social media can do.
UM Wave 6 research studied Consumers across 62 countries to see how they engage with social media sites and brands.Results from the study showed that in January 2012 the top 10 search terms worldwide were all social media related sites which included Google, Facebook, YouTube, Baidu, blogspot.com and Twitter. Facebook was found to be the most searched word on the internet and accounted for over 10% of all website visits in the United States.
As many online users continue to spend large portions of their day on social media sites, brands should look at this as excellent opportunity to engage with their customers 24-7.

New tax laws for small businesses
Tax season. It’s estimated that individuals and businesses spend approximately 6.1 billion hours per year complying with IRS filing requirements — time that most small business owners would rather spend on activities that actually grow their companies.
But even though the majority of small business owners (70%) farm out the job to a professional tax preparer, it’s important for every business owner to remain engaged with the tax preparations process. In many cases, the direct involvement of the business owner results in reductions in tax liability and a direct improvement to the company’s bottom line.
According to Barbara Weltman, tax expert and author of J.K. Lasser’s Small Business Taxes 2012, there are several new or irregular tax laws that will impact business owners’ total liability during the 2012 tax season.
